Rajgir was once the capital of the Magadha Empire. History of the place goes to the Pre-Buddha period when Rajgir was a center of political and religious activity. Today the place is not its original splendid form and tourists can only see some remnants of the glorious city of Rajgir. Rajgir is a pilgrim destination for Buddhists and Jain followers. Rajgir is the place where Lord Buddha had spent his significant and quality time doing meditation and preaching. Rajgir is surrounded by many other tourist destinations.

Hazaribagh National Park

Hazaribagh houses a wildlife sanctuary that has many wildlife animals such as bear, nilgai, sambar, chital, tiger, panther, and Kakar, etc. The sanctuary is located at an altitude of 616 m and has many lakes. You can explore the wildlife through watchtowers located inside the sanctuary.

Chhota Nagpur Plateau

Chhota Nagpur is a region of wild animals, rivers, lakes, and greenery. Located at an altitude of 300-900 meters, the plateau has verdant valleys to see and tribal culture of indigenous people in their original habitat is another attraction at the place. Tribes like Santhal, Ho, Munda, Oraon, Koi, Chero, Kharia, Paharia are really worth observing and a silent study of their living and culture would really be a good idea.

Parasnath Hill

Parasnath hill is a pilgrim destination located in Gaya. Jain religious scriptures reveal that out of 24 Jain Tirthankars, 22 received salvation at this place and for this simple reason, the place is the most sacred place for Jain followers. Jain devotees flock in large numbers every year to Parasnath hill.

Pawapuri

Pawapuri is located 90 kilometers from Gaya. Jain followers believe that visiting the place one can get rid of his sins. The Pawapuri is revered for being the place where Mahavir Jain took his last breath. A popular Jain tale says that when Mahavir died at Pawapuri, people took away not only the ashes but also scooped out earth which resulted in a tank. Pawapuri has a Jain temple called Jalamandir. Jalmandir is made of marble and is a major tourist attraction.

Bodh Gaya

The place where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. Bodh Gaya is 34 kilometers away from Rajgir. Bodh Gaya houses Bodhi Tree, Mahabodhi Temple, and other religious places relevant for Buddhists. Bodhi Tree is the same tree under which Gautam was enlightened, though it’s not the original tree albeit a sapling of the old tree brought from Sri Lanka. The Mahabodhi Temple enshrines the same Bodhi Tree. Lord Buddha’s giant statue is a major attraction here at Bodh Gaya.
