Ladakh Trekking

The diverse lands of Jammu and Kashmir state encompases three very distinct province Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Ladakh occupies the north eastern part of the state and largely comprises of plateu land amidst some of the highest mountain ranges in the world. The geography as well as ethnic population bear more resemblance with the Tibetans. The territory is bounded by the Great Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, the latter claiming the second highest peak in the world. The altitude here ranges from 9,000 feet (at Kargil) to 25,170 feet (at Saser Kangri in the Karakoram range). These ranges are interspersed by mountain passes from which one can have breath taking views.

Popular Treks at Ladakh

Spitok to Hemis via Markha Valley : The trekking starts from the village called Spitok, some 10 kms from Leh. The circuit takes from six to eight days encompassing the beautiful Markha Valley. Marka Valley runs parallel to the Indus and presents high altitude grasslands and passes. Stok Kangri the lofty peak lies to the south of Spitok. On trail places likely to be visited include Stok La (4848 m), Jigchen village, Yurutse village, Kunda La (4907 m), Shingo, Skiu, Nimaling Plain, Chogdo, Sumda, Martselang.

Likkir to Temisgang : Likkir and Temisgang are two hills connected by a motorable road. It is a three day hike through some picturesque valleys. The trek takes to the three major monasteries called Likkir, Rhidzong and Temisgang. The villages, that is Likkir and Temisgang provides for guest houses. This small trek is a real starter and good for the beginners.

Lamayuru to Alchi : The trek is a wonderful test for those who claim to be the best climbers. This trek takes about five days and all this time the trekkers have to go across some very high passes and through isolated villages. The trek starts fro Lamayuru and proceeds to Wanla, Phanjila, Hinju, Konki La, Sumdah Chunoon, Stakspi La and finally reaches Alchi.

Padum to Lamayuru : This trek runs across the famous Zanskar Ranges. The trek takes about 10 to 12 days to compelete. Padum and Lamayuru mark the starting point and the destination. One can start from any of these places. From Padum there are two trails which cover the half of the trek. Zanskar is crossed at the Nerag La village. The route goes as - Padum, Thonde, Honia, Nerag La, Yelchang, Karsha, Lingshet Gompa, Sengge La, Photokasar, Sisir La, Honupatta, Wanla, Prikrit La and finally to Lamayuru.
